October is a significant month for mental health awareness, as World Mental Health Day and World Homeless Day fall on October 10th. This is a chance to shine a light on Falcon Support Services and all the work we do.
Falcon Support Services are here for our service users and anyone at risk of or experiencing homelessness in Leicestershire can use our services. We recognise the ongoing struggles they face on the streets and provide solutions. We help those in crisis, provide shelter, housing, sustenance and we focus on recovery to help those with addictions. We offer wellbeing services with activities that help foster better mental health long-term. Over 89 per cent of our service users accessing housing support improved their health and wellbeing by using our services last year.
During the week leading up to Mental Health Awareness Day, we show how we help our services access longer-term solutions. These help to promote mental wellbeing in our organisation, all year round.
For instance, we have helped people like Zak who has lived with Falcon Support Services for some time and faced ongoing challenges related to his paranoid schizophrenia substance use and bereavement.
We contacted Cedars mental health, who supported Zak previously, they then made a referral to the Loughborough Community Mental Health team, and he was encouraged to speak to Cruse to receive bereavement counselling. Staff supported him to receive the correct medication, stored appropriately and prompted him to take it. A referral was made to Falcon’s Harm Reduction Team who encouraged him to attend Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and liaised with Turning Point to get him the right support.
While still awaiting mental health follow up, Zak is beginning to re-engage, attend the gym regularly and manage medication with staff support. He’s expressed new hope, noting the natural high of exercise over substances. Though the journey is ongoing, Zak is starting to believe a life without drugs and alcohol is possible.
Falcon Support Services does so much to help our service users overcome their mental health challenges with holistic activities and groups to enhance wellbeing.
Our service users are all welcome to enjoy the safe space at our Annex at Queens Road run by Carmel Martin, Emotional and Wellbeing Manager at Falcon Support Services.
For October our calendar is full of exciting wellbeing activities for example Monday begins with a mental health check in and the chance to get those endorphins racing with a session at Beasts Gym in Shepshed first thing. Then the Yap and Yum group meet from 10am until 12pm allowing people to talk and get together over a brew – as it always helps to talk.
Tuesday’s also sees our recovery group which so much good work does to help our service users on their path to healing. There is also therapeutic music sessions called Sing and String in the afternoon from 2.30pm until 4.30pm.
Wednesday’s see midweek mindfulness between 10-12 and sessions available at Beasts Gym from 10am until 11.30am at the Falcon Centre. People can also access a Wellbeing Toolkit from 12.30pm until 1.30pm and we also have a football session between 1pm and 2pm at The Leisure Centre open to all service users.
Thursdays are for practical skills, Lifewise and bingo and on Friday, 10 October Mental Health Day we also promote health and wellbeing outside with our weekly dog walk with the annex amblers who meet at the Falcon Centre. Next week there will be the opportunity to get green-fingered down at the allotment, gardening which promotes mental wellness and being outdoors, run by Community Manager Matt Taylor.
